DIFFICULT TEXTS: “I and my father are one.”

“29 >My Father, which gave them [eleven apostles] me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and my Father are one. 31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? 33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, make thyself God.” John 10:29-33, KJV.

The Gospel of John 10:30 states: “30 I and my Father are one”, my question is “one” what? In the previous verse Jesus states: “29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all;…” In the Gospel of John 14:28 Jesus states, “…for my Father is greater than I”. Obviously, Jesus and Jehovah, cannot be the same person if one is greater than the other. Jesus is referring to the fact that He and His Father are united in purpose, desire and unity!

So, now let us define what Jesus meant by the term “…one” in John 10:30. Jesus defines this term so very clearly in the Gospel of John chapter seventeen.

“9 I pray for them: [eleven apostles] I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. 10And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. 11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, THAT THEY MAY BE ONE, AS WE ARE [i. e. in purpose, desire and unity].” John 17:9-11. In this text Jesus is praying for the eleven faithful apostles that God had given to him, “…THAT THEY MAY BE ONE, AS WE ARE.” So, the “…ONE is in purpose, desire and unity.

“19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. 20Neither pray I for these alone, [the eleven] but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; [for all believers of all time] 21 THAT THEY ALL MAY BE ONE; AS THOU, FATHER, ART IN ME, AND I IN THEE, THAT THEY ALSO MAY BE ONE IN US: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22And the glory which thou gave me I have given them; THAT THEY MAY BE ONE, EVEN AS WE ARE ONE: 23 I IN THEM, AND THOU IN ME, THAT THEY MAY BE MADE PERFECT IN ONE; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.” John 17:19-23. In this text Jesus is praying for all believers that believe the truth “21 THAT THEY ALL MAY BE ONE; AS THOU, FATHER, ART IN ME, AND I IN THEE, THAT THEY ALSO MAY BE ONE IN US.” Again, the “…one” is in purpose and unity.
