"(Hezekiah) did right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father David had done ... He trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel; so that after him there was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor among those who were before him. For he clung to the LORD; he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments... And the LORD was with him; wherever he went he prospered." 2 Kings 18:3,5-6
Of all the wicked kings that Israel and Judah had, Hezekiah was a proverbial breath of fresh air amidst those dark and difficult times. Although several generations removed from King David, his heart's desire was to know and serve Yahweh as David had.
Hezekiah, we are told, "trusted in the LORD" and "clung to the LORD." How was it that he both trusted and clung to the LORD? He "did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments." Hezekiah's trust was firmly grounded in obedience.
When I think of Hezekiah as one who "clung to the LORD," the first image that comes to mind is that of a small child with his/her little arms tightly wrapped around mom or dad. Wherever mom or dad are going, this little one is as well. And doesn't this serve as a fitting illustration of our desire? We want to cling to our Father, and to His Son our Savior. And we do so by clinging to that which pleased them.
"For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith." 1 John 5:3-4.
As we cling in faith and obedience today, be assured that we are gaining the victory that overcomes the world.
