And Jesus was saying to them, 'Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.' Six days later, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them; and His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them. Elijah appeared to them along with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, 'Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.' For he did not know what to answer; for they became terrified. Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, 'This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!' All at once they looked around and saw no one with them anymore, except Jesus alone." Mark 9:1-8
Few events in the earthly life and ministry of Jesus are as mystifying as this one called the Transfiguration. The clue to its meaning surely is found in the very first verse, in which Jesus says, "there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power." We understand that the kingdom come with power is yet future, so that which the disciples saw must have been a glimpse of the future. For a brief, shining moment the glorious future broke through on a mountain. With this amazing event occurring very near the the time of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection, it seems obvious that the real purpose of this vision was to strengthen the faith of his disciples as they faced their darkest hour with Jesus. They would all forsake Him, but would eventually come back; perhaps in part because of this vision.
A vision is a powerful force. A strong vision inspires and energizes. Vision is closely tied to faith and hope, and it is vital - "where there is no vision the people perish" ( Prov.29:18 KJV).
Perhaps we need a fresh "Transfiguration vision." With the increasingly challenging times we live in, we need this glorious victory vision of Jesus and the kingdom come with power to sustain us as we press on. To further kindle and clarify this vision of victory, I suggest to you that reading and studying the various visions of victory in the Book of Revelation will help.
It is promised that "'in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams'" Acts 2:17 (cf.Joel)
Spirit-inspired visions and dreams are promised for these last days, and perhaps primarily to encourage and sustain us. May God's great vision of victory in Christ provide just that for you today, and every day.
