"And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, 'Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.' And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them." Mark 10:13-16
If we were to summarize Jesus' words and teachings here, it could be with the phrase, "grow up and be like a child." Confusing and even seemingly contradictory, real maturity is found in child-likeness. Granted, some child-like qualities like selfishness and temper tantrums are hardly what Jesus had in mind. But the child-like qualities of simplicity, honesty, and humility must surely have been His intent.
Humility, in particular, is often misunderstood. A typical stereotype of humility is of someone non-assertive, lacking conviction and opinions, and generally suffering from an inferiority complex. In a world of posturing, pressuring, and aggressive assertion, humility seems more liability than asset. And yet Jesus prizes humility enough to say that it is essential in belonging to the kingdom of God.
A bit more kingdom humility makes the world a better place today. The fact is, child-like humility just might be the most powerful witness we have to an oppressive, heavy-handed, overbearing world. As Jesus said, "whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all" Mark 10:44.
May the wrong-side up world see more of Jesus' upside-down kingdom through the servant humility of His people today.
