Caution!

"Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all ...And Jesus, looking around, said to His disciples, “How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!... it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” Mark 10:15,23,25

Red light runners have become all to common in our area. Failing to obey these important traffic lights imperils all drivers at these intersections. Similarly, there are scriptural directions and indicators that ought to be heeded.

Caution! On the road to the Kingdom, I need to make sure that child-like qualities are intact in my life. Am I teachable? Am I humble? Am I uncomplicated?

Caution! Wealth and materialism could cost me the Kingdom. Am I possessed by my possessions? Am I selfishly hoarding what I have? Am I generously investing in the things concerning the kingdom?

Perhaps you've noticed that Jesus' caution signs link child-likeness and wealth. This is not coincidental because wealth has the potential to destroy essential child-like qualities.

A child is totally dependent upon his/her parents to meet their needs. Spiritual child-likeness causes us to be dependent on our heavenly Father, but wealth can divert trust in our Father to our treasures.

Very young children have yet to learn about power and status, but wealth can tempt us to use it to achieve power and status. Wealth, then, can undermine and even destroy unpretentious and uncomplicated child-like qualities essential to entering the kingdom of God.

Traffic lights and signs are there for the good and safety of drivers. Scriptural guidelines and signs serve a similar purpose. Directives about child-likeness and wealth are for our good, as Jesus taught.

As we travel the kingdom highway today, we do well to heed these important directions. They are not given to be restrictive, but rather to be liberating. They guide us into life abundant now, and even more so in the age to come. So, may we grow up and be children in the best spiritual sense, and may wealth be a tool for a kingdom rather than a barrier to it.
