"So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom" Psalm 90:12
The first two chapters of 1 Chronicles read like something from ancestry.com. It is easy enough to skip over the details of who begat whom and move on to something more inspiring and applicable. And yet this genealogical record spoke very personally to a man I once knew. He stated that the fact that every person listed lived and eventually died made him very aware that he too would one day die. Not exactly an encouraging thought, but one that makes us consider the truth of Psalm 90:12. If our days are numbered, then we do well to number them so as to make them count to the fullest measure. Make the most of every moment; make every day rich with meaning and purpose.
Ephesians 5:15,16 conveys a similar thought to Psalm 90:12 -
"Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil."
An unwise person is financially frivolous and accumulates a heavy load of debt, assuming that there will somehow be a way out of this debt in the future. Time can be viewed the same way: I can live for pleasure now and somehow consider that things of eternal importance will be taken care of tomorrow. Except that tomorrow may never come.
Grave markers are engraved with one's date of birth and date of death, separated by a simple dash mark. That little dash represents all of our mortal life and activities and, as someone has said, live for the dash. In other words, make that dash as full as possible of all that is important. Make time for family and friends. Consider and live for that which lasts beyond mortal life: commitment to Christ, service, outreach and evangelism, the things concerning the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33).
This day and moment is a precious gift. We do well to invest it rather than squander it. Let's make it count for that which truly counts.
