"Thus says the LORD, "Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; And you will find rest for your souls" Jeremiah 6:16.
A beloved hymn states, "He leadeth me: O blessed thought! O words with heavenly comfort fraught! Whate'er I do, where'er I be, still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me." God leads those who willingly make the choice to let Him do so.
Our Father appeals to us through the words of Jeremiah to "stand by the ways and see." If we would carefully consider the misguided ways of the multitudes, we will recognize that there is a much better way, and that we should "ask for the ancient paths" that the great men and women of old chose.
Another "path" verse that has often been on my mind lately is Isaiah 30:21 "Your ears will hear a word behind you, 'This is the way, walk in it,' whenever you turn to the right or to the left." Although my faith is prone to waver, I find peaceful assurance in knowing that He is directing my way on the path that He see best.
We have not been promised an easy path, but one that ultimately leads to "rest for your souls." Unpopular as the ancient path of discipline, sacrifice, service, and holiness is with the masses, it is the way of contentment that leads to eternal life in the age to come.
As with every day, today will present us with a series of choices. Some choices will be relatively inconsequential, while others will have eternal significance. May we ask for the ancient paths, as commended through Jeremiah.
