"During His earthly life, He offered prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the One who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence. Though He was God’s Son, He learned obedience through what He suffered. After He was perfected, He became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him" Hebrews 5:7-9 (Holman CSB)
Being present with a passionate person of prayer is an amazing experience. I met for a period of time with man whose prayers deeply impacted me. His prayers were so heartfelt that I was almost embarrassed to be present. It was not unusual for him to become extremely emotional as he prayed.
Being present with Jesus as He prayed must have been an extraordinary experience for His disciples. His verbal prayers likely were deeply personal and emotional. Especially so were His agonizing prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane. It was there that He prayed "with loud cries and tears to the One who could save him from death." Amidst this emotional agony, He "learned obedience by what he suffered." His sufferings were a valuable teaching tool in obedience.
We have a Savior who agonizes on our behalf. He so empathizes with us through our difficulties and suffering that He pours himself out emotionally for us as he sits at the right hand of the Father. His practice is our pattern in learning obedience through what we suffer. We too learn greater obedience amidst adversity.
Jesus was perfected through His agonizing experience so that He might become the source of salvation for us all. We have been, are being, and will be saved through His perfection. If we too learn obedience amidst our struggles, and persevere, perfection awaits us when salvation comes to fullness at the return of Jesus. May that be powerful incentive to press on today, as we follows the example of Jesus.
