"He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself." Hebrews 7:25-27
I am thankful to have not lived during the era of the Law, in which animal sacrifices had to be offered for sins. In my case, a whole herd would need to have been offered.
Priests were very busy people under the old system. They were constantly involved in all that was necessary for purity and sacrifice for sin - both for themselves as well as everyone else. There was certainly job security for them in that sin was the pandemic of sorts that would never end. But, their work has been rendered obsolete in that there was One who offered Himself once and for all, and has sat down at our Father's right hand.
If there is one regret in not living under the old Law system it is this: perhaps the ongoing sacrifice of animals might have been a graphic and important reminder of the seriousness of sin. The once-and-for-all sacrifice of Jesus can easily be an out-of-sight, out-of-mind event. Taking His sacrifice for granted is a real temptation. For that reason, I see that the practice of communion is an important and necessary reminder. Unless we are regularly confronted with the horror of Roman crucifixion, we are likely to spiral down into cheap grace which belittles the value of what Christ has done.
The Book of Hebrews is a vital reminder that "He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them." Lest we think that Jesus offered Himself once, sat down at the right hand of the Father, and is twiddling His thumbs while waiting for the call to return to earth, note that He "always lives to make intercession for them." Maybe a part of that intercession is stirring up gratitude within us when we are in danger of devaluing His sacrifice.
If you are prone to worrying about your sin, remember that the price is paid up, once and for all. Freed from that worry, focus on Jesus always living to intercede for you. Whatever comes your way today, He's got this. And He will again tomorrow, and the next day. So, let's live, work, and serve out of grace gratitude.
