"Have you not even read this Scripture: ‘The stone which the builders rejected, This became the chief corner stone; This came about from the LORD, And it is marvelous in our eyes’?” Mark 12:10-11
Jesus challenged the ever-antagonist, unbelieving religious leaders of the day concerning their familiarity with an important scriptural truth. Ironically, their rejection of Him as Messiah was a fulfillment of this.
A cornerstone, in ancient times, was the most important part of a building. One writer says: "In ancient times the cornerstone was the stone at the corner of two walls that united them. It was the visible corner of the foundation of the building and the starting point of all future building above the foundation. It was the most costly stone because of its beauty and strength. It was also the largest, most solid and carefully constructed stone ... The cornerstone was the place where the building was joined and also the place where it rested."
To set aside, or to reject the cornerstone, would be to resist any future building on that foundation. The massive cornerstone (sometimes in excess of 40 feet high) was absolutely essential to a level, plumb, and solid structure.
Jesus has been rejected by many people throughout the ages, starting with the religious leaders and the Jewish nation over 2,000 years ago. But God has made this rejected Cornerstone into a magnificent structure called the Church - not a brick and mortar building, but a flesh and blood one of which you and I are a part.
As walls not connected to the cornerstone will lean, sway, and eventually fall, lives not connected to the Chief Cornerstone are equally at risk. Our connection to the Cornerstone is essential to a level, balanced, and secure life.
As the disciple whom Jesus renamed, "the rock" (petros, Peter), he extends an important challenge to us: "And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ" 1 Peter 2:4-5.
May this be an especially productive day of being built into that spiritual house that the Chief Cornerstone intends.
