Guard Against Spiritual Weakness

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places." Ephesians 6:10-12

The sobering truth is, we are at war. That fact ought not to cause us to be paranoid, but rather vigilant. The reality requires preparation, and the best preparation is to be "strong in the Lord and the strength of His might." An awareness of the battle and our vulnerability punctuates the need to be strong in the Lord and His might.

"Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour" 1 Peter 5:8. Animals of prey look for the easiest target for their next meal; the weak sheep on the fringe of the flock. If our adversary looks for weak sheep, what do they look like? Spiritually weak sheep become so by being spiritual picky eaters with Bible reading and study, church involvement, and prayer. A steady diet of worldly junk food replaces true spiritual nourishment.

No one deliberately chooses to be weak. Just like the tactics of the enemy, it is much more subtle. Regular spiritual disciplines like Bible study, prayer, service, and participation in church life, become infrequent. Strength slowly diminishes in almost imperceptible ways.

So how do we guard against spiritual weakness? First of all, remember the reality of the war. Know that you have an enemy bent on your demise. As such, bolster resources. Out of urgent need, seek the Lord and His might. Prayerfully put on the spiritual suit of armor daily. And ever remember, having done these things, that "He who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world" 1 John 4:4.
