"while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints." Jude 3

There is plenty of evidence that the Christian faith is under attack. We need only look at rapidly changing values and morals around us. As Jude challenged his audience, the urgent need is to "contend earnestly for the faith." This first-century call to action is our call to action as well.

As I write these words, the country of Ukraine is under vicious attack. There are many stories of great heroism as citizens "contend earnestly" for their freedom and rights. These serve as examples as we defend the faith.

What can one person do? What difference can I make for the cause of the faith? First of all, don't give up an inch of ground in the territory of established truth. Despite the attacks, the Bible remains the "God-breathed" word of God. Yahweh is still Creator God, Jesus is still His sinless created Son, the Kingdom of God will be established on earth when Jesus returns.

Don't give in to despair and unbelief. It's easy to become discouraged and lose faith when the faith is under attack. Knowing what was ahead, Jesus asked the question, "when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?" (Luke 18:8). Belief in the original message will be rare as this age draws to a close, but there will be unprecedented opportunities for those who hold true to it. Daniel of the Old Testament spoke cryptically of this in Daniel 11:33 "Those who have insight among the people will give understanding to the many". The faithful people of God ("those who have insight") will assist many in understanding God's truth before this age ends and gives way to the coming Kingdom of God.

Living in an age when the very foundation of our beliefs are under attack, it is urgent that we truly know what we believe, and that we defend it. We must draw close to others who also hold to the faith, and we must live a winsome and genuine lifestyle.

And one other thing: keep looking for the return of Jesus, because He said there would be times such as these before He would come back. Dig in, hold on, and look up.
