If You Build It, It Will Burn

"The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness" 2 Peter 3:9-11

If you build it, it will burn. That may sound like an unusual rephrasing of a famous baseball movie line, but it reflects a biblical truth. Everything that exists in the material world is destined for fiery destruction. In fact, the very elements that are the building blocks of all matter will be destroyed with intense heat. Only a relatively small amount of matter is used in fission and fusion reactions, but a vast amount of energy is unleashed. The chain reaction of the breakdown of all matter is beyond comprehension.

This coming cataclysm is prefaced with our Father's desire that it be avoided by all people. It's like knowing that someone is driving their car right toward an imminent collision and frantically trying to warn them. The day of the LORD is a fixed event; how we are affected by it is determined by personal decisions. It is a tragedy easily avoided.

If everything around us is to be consumed in a fiery cataclysm, it behooves us to ask how we ought to live so as to avoid it. For starters, we might want to hold things loosely that are destined for destruction. No matter how much we value our home, car, boat, motorcycle, tools, or wealth, they will not survive. Becoming too attached to what we will eventually lose seems unwise.

Knowing the truth about the coming catastrophe motivates a rescue mission mentality. You know where a life boat is on a sinking ship, and there is an urgent mission to get as many people as possible into it. Being born again through the gospel message is that lifeboat, but time is of the essence.

We have been given some important need-to-know advance information. May we live and serve wisely today in light of that knowledge.
