Finding Peace

"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful." John 14:27

True peace is not the absence of conflict, but rather a state of well being; of wholeness. It is well described by the apostle Paul when he said "I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am" Philippians 4:11. To be at peace is to be content in our circumstances. Truth be told, many people are not content in their circumstances. If I only had more money, a bigger, better house or car, or another marriage partner, etc. Such desires or cravings stir up unrest and discontent; a lack of inner peace.

I well remember a time, several decades ago, when anxiety was overwhelming and almost suffocating. It was a very stressful time when real peace was elusive. But, the words of Jesus, recorded in John 14:27, literally became my peace when I recited them and meditated on them. I found real peace in His words!

There is much in the world that can rob us of peace. The media provides us with a steady stream of news concerning violence, war, conflict, man-made and natural disasters. Overindulgence in this information is a sure recipe for anxiety and unrest. The words of scripture, and especially Jesus' words, provide peace beyond our circumstances.

In a fallen, sinful world, we will never find true peace and contentment in our circumstances. Circumstances are ever-changing, and thus will our mental condition be if tied to them. True peace is found in our Savior's words and promises. May you find that lasting peace in Him and His words today.
