“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” Matthew 5:5.
The meek get a bad rap. It’s been said that when the meek inherit the earth, will anyone step forward to claim it? Apparently the stereotype of meekness is weakness.
The Beatitudes of Jesus are stair steps upward to the kingdom life. We begin by acknowledging our spiritual poverty (the poor in spirit), responding emotionally to our condition (those who mourn), and then developing the appropriate mindset (the meek).
Meekness is not thinking too highly or lowly of ourselves. To be meek is to see ourselves as God through Christ sees us. The words to an old gospel song sum it up well: “I’m just a sinner saved by grace.” Spiritual arrogance is thinking that I have something of value to offer God in exchange for eternal life. Meekness is acknowledging that I am naturally spiritually bankrupt, deeply mourning over that fact, and conditioned in attitude to value what God freely offers through Christ. I am a spiritual beggar, thankful that I have found sumptuous spiritual nourishment through grace.
Moses is regarded as one of the greatest leaders of Israel, and yet it says of him, “Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth” Number 12:3. He serves as an example of the character quality that God desires of those who will inherit the earth.
The meek do not suffer from self-esteem issues, but rather see themselves - and life - from the perspective of our Father. The meek are well-adjusted people on earth today, who optimistically anticipate their great future inheritance.
