True Treasure

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” Matthew 6:19-21.

If the stock market is any indication, earthly treasures are volatile. As I write these words, we are currently in the worse inflationary time in nearly forty years. The stock market has shifted from bear to bull, and the threat of a recession looms. Potential retirees are urged to pause their plans until the economy is more stable.

A sound investment strategy does not involve stocks, bonds, or a high-yield account. Our best investment is with the bank of heaven, where deposits are truly insured and guaranteed.

Jesus advises careful thought as to our investments, because an emotional element is involved. We love what we value, and value what we love. We invest both with our wealth and with our heart.

It’s been said that we can see what someone values by studying their checkbook or banking statement. Beyond mortgage and car payments, rent and utilities, that which we value is revealed through what we do with discretionary funds. What do you love spending money on?

The practice of tithing is both a heart and wealth discipline. Giving the first ten percent of our earnings is not a legalistic requirement, but rather an important tool for guarding our hearts. Tithing transcends God’s old covenant Law system in that an enduring promise is attached to it: “‘test Me now in this,’ says the LORD of hosts, ‘if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows’” Malachi 3:10. This promise is basis for stating that you can’t outgive God.

Investing with the bank of heaven is more than a financial choice. As we invest with wealth, worship, service and supportive fellowship, we safeguard our hearts against abominable idolatry.

May we treasure that which is true treasure.
