Noble Minded

"Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so." Acts 17:11

Every follower of Christ ought to eagerly receive and discern the truth of scripture. An abundance of pseudo-truth abounds, and the only way to discern truth from error is to be an eager, discerning Bible student. This ultimately is the personal responsibility of every believer.

I've talked to far too many church-goers who rely solely on their pastor or church leader to guide them in the area of truth and error. Many reason that these pastors and leaders devote much time to study, so their word thus carries biblical authority. Such reasoning is dangerous. No matter how sincere and studious a pastor or church leader may be, they will ultimately be wrong from time to time. How can a believer discern truth from error with a church leader unless he or she is a personal student of the Bible?

The best way to avoid error is to embrace truth. In the tumultuous last days when antichrist arrives massive deception will sway countless numbers away from truth. We are told in 2 Thessalonians 2:11 that "God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false" because "they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved." (v.10). There is a significant difference between being familiar with truth and loving the truth. James 2:19 tells us that the demons are familiar with the truth of the oneness of God, but it is a source of terror to them.

Love and live truth. Let truth bring discernment enlightenment to what you read and hear. Be diligent in personal Bible study. Discuss what you read with other believers. Let truth guard your ways and be a delight to you.
