"And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, ‘So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak’" Matthew 26:40-41.
The true test of character is in the critical times. Moments of crisis and challenge are when we are most tempted to compromise values and beliefs.
On the night of Jesus’ arrest, suffering, and eventual death, He was greatly struggling in prayer concerning the Father’s will. He sought an alternative way, but ultimately submitted to His Father’s will. All the while, He had instructed His disciples to be vigilant and prayerful in advance of the coming trial. But, rather than fervently watching and praying, they slept.
We live in times that demand special vigilance and prayer. Events are rapidly unfolding that appear to have prophetic significance. Are we awake and aware? As we read in 1 Thessalonians 6, “so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.” Unlike Jesus disciples in a crucial time, let us be especially awake and alert, wisely assessing the current situation, and living as we ought.
Watchful prayer is the arena where scripture and life meet. Through prayer, God's word has its most powerful convicting work in our lives, and transforming effect upon our lifestyle. Vigilant prayer is the crucible where intention is transformed into action.
Among that which we seek from the Father in prayer today, may the formation of our character be high on the list. In times of crisis, others will look to us concerning how we live, and our lifestyle witness will be especially compelling.
