"The LORD looked at him and said, ‘Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?’ He said to Him, ‘O LORD, how shall I deliver Israel? Behold, my family is the least in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father's house.’ But the LORD said to him, ‘Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man’" Judges 6:14-16.
The priority is not ability, but availability. Credentials are unimportant to the God who chooses and enables. Gideon’s reasoning was that he from an unimportant family, and he was the youngest member of that family. King Saul reasoned similarly: “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin?” 1 Samuel 9:21. Per human standards, Gideon, Saul, and David (1 Samuel 16:11) lacked the necessary credentials for God’s work. But the reasoning behind God’s choices is reflected in this verse: "God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong" 1 Corinthians 1:27.
We too are absurd choices for the task that we have been assigned. While many of us have little power and influence in this present age, we have been chosen by Jesus to rule with Him in His world-wide one-thousand year kingdom on earth. We may be labeled the least likely to succeed by worldly standards, but we are chosen for greatness by our Lord Jesus.
The rich and powerful in the world should not be deceived by their current exalted status. Even as our humble position in the world is short-lived, so is their privileged position. The tables will truly be turned when the mighty are humbled, and the humble exalted.
Availability is priority over ability in that the God who calls equips. He calls the least and the lowliest to shame the powerful and proud for His glory and fame.
