Growth & Knowledge

"Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge” 2 Peter 2:5.

The first chapter of 2 Peter outlines some key building blocks for the life of a follower of Christ. Because God through Christ has supplied divine power for everything needed for life and godliness (verse 3), we take the supply off of the shelf, so to speak, and add it into our lifestyle. We begin with our faith, which is best understood as faith in the faith - resolute belief in the core truths of Scripture. We build moral excellence upon that faith foundation, and we diligently add to this knowledge.

In the original language, the word for knowledge here means functional, or experiential knowledge. It is knowledge gleaned from first-hand experience. This is not merely textbook knowledge, but real life knowledge. It is a growing working knowledge of the plan of God, and growing knowledge of God Himself, and Jesus His Son.

We live in a mind-boggling information age. The information we are daily bombarded with grows exponentially by the day and even by the hour. The potential for growth in knowledge has never been greater, and yet how important is the knowledge gained from much of this information? There is much potential to be educated in the wrong school. For the follower of Christ, the objection of our learning and knowledge is well described by the apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 1:5 “But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.” These are in harmony with the growth building blocks we see in 2 Peter 1. If our knowledge does not increase our spiritual vitality in relationship with our Creator Father, and His Son, its value is questionable.

There is opportunity for growth in knowledge this day and every day. May we be wisely discerning of the knowledge we grow in, as Paul cautioned Timothy: “O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called “knowledge”— which some have professed and thus gone astray from the faith” 1 Timothy 6:20.
