"To those who have obtained a faith of equal privilege with ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ. May grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord" 2 Peter 2:1-2 HCSB.
Those who have come to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ enjoy equal privilege, according to these verses. This is significant coming from the human author of this letter, the apostle Peter. It would be easy to think of Jesus’ original band of apostles as being “spiritually elite,” but it is not so. The righteousness of our God, and our Savior Jesus, is equally meted out to all who come in faith. As equals in the faith, it is the earnest desire and prayer of Peter that grace and peace be multiplied to us as we grow in knowledge of our Father, and Jesus our Lord.
Let’s begin with grace. How much do we know of grace, and how much of it do we experience? By definition, grace is the unmerited favor of God, but the experience of grace is harder to grasp than the definition. It is much too easy to hold past failures and sin again ourselves when God through Christ has richly forgiven and liberated us. We easily show ourselves much less grace than God freely extends.
It is interesting that Peter desires that grace and peace be multiplied to us. As we embrace and savor grace, we more greatly experience peace. And it is from the abundance of both grace and peace that we extend such to others.
The multiplying of grace and peace can only be realized through a growing knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord. This knowledge is intellectual as well as experiential. It is intimate knowledge that comes through living in relationship. Jesus described it in John 17:3 “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”
To experience grace is to experience peace. Both grace and peace can only be realized through a living relationship with our Creator Father, and His Son Jesus. From the overflow of grace and peace experienced through them we extend grace and peace to others.
May grace and peace be multiplied to you today in abundance through a relationship knowledge of our Father and His Son.
