Limitations

"Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen"  Ephesians 3:20-21.

If there are limitations, they are self-imposed. The Creator of the universe is able to do, as another translation words it, "superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think." He does so according to the limitless Holy Spirit power residing within us, for the purpose of bringing glory to Him through the church, and through Jesus His Son.

An incredible promise is given according to an important criteria. Will this thing I imagine and think bring glory to my Father, in and through the church of His Son, Jesus? If it indeed will, then we are free to pull at all the stops in our imagination and ask fervently! What great thing(s), does our heavenly Father want to give if we would but ask?

As many of you know, I am currently involved in a new ministry venture. The goal and dream is the establishment of a new church work, but what that might look like in this era could be different than at another time. A strong anti-Christian wind blows in our culture today (although not as strong in this more conservative community). Is the traditional model of church effective for the glory of our Father, and for the purposes of His Son? It is a question well worth pondering.

This much is certain: it is the express will of our Father, and His Son, that lost people be found and rescued for the kingdom (i.e., 2 Peter 3:9; Matthew 18:11). So, what might we imagine and ask as to reaching those people? How could we be enabled and available to be disciple makers? Who might He entrust us to reach and train to be kingdom citizens? Can you imagine?

The previous verses in Ephesians 3 contain a prayer that is in harmony with the infinite possibilities reflected in the verses we have been considering:

"For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God" (Ephesians 3:14-19).

Give some careful thought to this insightful prayer. This is what every person ultimately needs. If we ask that these things might be accomplished in our lives, and then in the lives of those we reach and disciple, great glory will come to our Father, and Jesus will be exalted as He ought to be.
