"For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light" Colossians 1:9-12.
"For this reason" indicated an important purpose for prayer. We read in the previous verses about the faith, hope, and love of the believers in Colosse. This prayer, then, is about what needs to be built upon that foundation of faith, hope, and love. It is essentially a prayer that we know God's will so thoroughly that we then live in such a way as to bear fruit.
According to this important prayer, knowledge begets knowledge when we "walk" what we know. If we are filled with a knowledge of God's will, and are faithful to cultivate a God-pleasing life based upon His will, we will continue to increase in our knowledge of God. In addition to that, we will be given Spirit strength, and the fruit of the Spirit will be manifested in steadiness, patience, and joyful thanks.
The essence of the Colossian prayer is that of building character that makes us fit for the kingdom of God. When knowledge becomes truth in action, knowledge increases and kingdom character is progressively built.
There are two basic questions we can ask any time we open the Bible to any passage: (1) What does it say? (2) What does it say for me to do? If we seriously consider and practice these two questions, we will be productive as our Father intends.
The Colossian prayer is an important prayer for us to pray for ourselves, and for other followers of Christ that we know. May we be filled with knowledge that produces character, and that the forming of character produces even more knowledge. Through this process may our lives bear fruit, and may we experience abundant power that cultivates steadiness, patience and joyful thankfulness as we reflect upon the Father who is preparing us to share in His wonderful inheritance. Could there be any more important prayer than this?
