“faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself ... "You see that faith was working with his (Abraham's) works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected … For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead." James 2:17,22,26.
It literally is easier said than done. Anyone can talk a good talk, but the real proof is walking the walk. Our words are either validated or discredited by how we live.
The book of James inseparably connects faith and works. As someone summarized it, the faith that saves is the faith that works. We are not saved by works, but the fruit of saving faith is manifested in deeds and lifestyle.
You may have heard the story of a daredevil tightrope walker back in the day of such antics. A cable was stretched across the the mighty Niagara River, near the Falls, and the tightrope walker was prepared to push a wheelbarrow across and back. Asking the curious crowd if they believed that he could do it, one man seemed especially confident concerning the feat. Affirming his belief repeatedly, the daredevil finally issued the ultimate challenge to the man: "Then get in the wheelbarrow." Definitive action would be the true proof of his faith profession.
Abraham is arguably the greatest example of faith. When called of God to a land that God would give him, he pulled up stakes and moved, without knowing exactly where he was going. After his son of promise was born in his extreme old age, when asked to offer him as a sacrifice, he took action and potentially offered him, being prevented at the last moment by God’s intervention.
What is God calling you to consider as a step of faith? Is there a particular service area you sense a calling to, even though you may feel ill-equipped? Is there a neighbor or coworker to whom you sense a calling to speak the gospel message to? Are you s ensing a nudge to forgo an hour of sleep to rise early for prayer and Bible study? Faith truly becomes faith when we answer the call and take action. May we hear the voice of faith today, and validate its reality through action.
