Jurisdiction

"I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, 'You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 'Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession. 'You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware'" Psalm 2:7-9.

These verses contain a very simple and important summary of our Father’s great plan. Its importance is qualified in that it contains the “decree of the LORD.” Kings issue decrees, so we immediately sense that what follows carries great authority.

Psalm 2 is a prophetic Messianic Psalm. We see God’s Son speaking His Father’s decree, although this was written long before Jesus’ birth. He echoes the words of His Father, that He is His begotten Son. The word, “begotten,” is significant in that it reveals something of Jesus’ humanity. Each of us owe our existence to a father who begat us, and a mother in whose womb we were conceived. The uniqueness of Jesus is that He was begotten through the eternal Father.

The great decree of the Father concerning His Son is that He need only ask of His Father (which He surely has done!), and He would be given the nations and the entire earth as His possession. He will inevitably triumph!

What all of this means to us is that our life purpose and direction ought to be in harmony with the great decree of our Father. God's begotten Son is His pride and joy, and should be ours as well. God is in the process of allowing His Son to have jurisdiction over all His creation, and we can freely and gladly participate in that plan. It is as basic as praying for God's kingdom to come, and His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven - around us and through us.

Living in this present evil age can easily be like being adrift in a small rowboat amidst hurricane-force winds and waves. Discovering and harmonizing with the great decree of God is like being securely tied to a sturdy dock in a calm bay.

May God's great decree give you hope and stability today, and always, amidst the raging storm of our changing times.
