"Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal" John 6:27.
For most people, the majority of adult years are spent employed in the workforce. It may see like an absurd question but, what are you working for? The immediate and likely answer would be for a paycheck; the financial means to put a roof overhead, clothes to wear, and food on the table. These are certainly obvious reasons, but there is a higher cause for work, according to Jesus.
The well-known Lord's Prayer contains a phrase with a deeper meaning than seems apparent. To pray, "give us this day our daily bread," is about more than seeking three square meals a day. The truest intent is best expressed in praying, "give us today of the bread of tomorrow." In harmony with Jesus’ words in John 6:27, we seek and work for the food of eternal life.
The pursuit of daily bread and the bread of tomorrow are not in conflict with each other. We are called to assume responsibility for personal and family needs through employment (1 Timothy 5:8), but if in working for today's bread we neglect a pursuit of the bread of tomorrow, we have missed the true nourishment that our Lord Jesus has for us. He promises to give us "the food which endures to eternal life."
The best slice of daily bread is some quiet moments in scripture and prayer at the beginning of the day. Unless deliberately fasting, few people would neglect regular meal nourishment during the day. And yet how many neglect to feed on the word of God on a daily basis? Better the morsel of a verse or chapter for even a few minutes than to starve spiritually all day.
Most of you who read these words are busy people with lots of responsibilities and time pressures. I trust and pray that these brief messages contribute to your spiritual nourishment but, more importantly, that they create a hunger within for even more “food which endures to eternal life.”
