"the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith” 1 Timothy 1:5.
Pragmatic people aren’t afraid to ask, “What's the point?” In a world of hype, it is wise to be skeptical as to the underlying motive behind the message.
What is the point of Bible teaching and preaching? A concise and accurate purpose statement is found in 1 Timothy 1:5. Every preacher and teacher does well to check the motive of their message with this important guide, and every hearer ought to do the same. Any other motive is suspect.
It is interesting that love from a pure heart is first on the list. If Jesus has qualified love for our brothers and sisters as the identifying mark of His followers (John 13:35), it should come as no surprise that this would be top of the list for instruction's goal.
The goal of a good conscience follows next. True Bible instruction does not confuse, but instead makes plain the plan of God. The kingdom standards of the Sermon On the Mount, in particular, clearly stress the attitudes and lifestyle of believers. These clear teachings allow us to walk in obedience with a clear conscience.
Lastly, the goal of a sincere faith is listed. True biblical instruction plainly sets forth the great truths of the Bible, and appeals to hearers to place faith upon truth. A sincere faith cannot be based upon personal opinions and confusing man-made doctrines. A sincere faith must rest upon the truth of the one true God (Deuteronomy 6:4), Jesus, His Son and messiah, and the kingdom of God hope and lifestyle. Faith comes through hearing this life-changing truth.
What's the point? Biblical instruction is more than intellectual. Unless it stirs the heart to genuine love, it falls short of its purpose. Unless it contributes to a healthy mindset, it deviates from its purpose. Unless it causes faith to grow, it is misguides. May we carefully check what we teach, preach, and hear against this important standard.
