Never Forget

“Then the seventh angel sounded; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever” Revelation 11:15.

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away’” Revelation 21:1-4.

In a world of war and conflict, natural and man made disasters, injustice and oppression, it is easy to lose sight of the inevitable victory of the coming King and kingdom of God. The writer of the well-known hymn, “This Is My Father’s World,” summarized it well: “This is my Father's world: O let me ne'er forget That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the Ruler yet. This is my Father's world, The battle is not done, Jesus who died shall be satisfied, and earth and heaven be one.”

The admonition to “let me ne'er forget” is important: if we focus too much on the siren sounds of today’s crises, we might be discouraged from listening hopefully for the coming sound of the great trumpet.

Perhaps you are especially in need of this reminder today. The sounds of battles in faraway places are not nearly as concerning as the personal battles before you. Health concerns, financial burdens, and/or marital and family crises loom far larger than Middle East or European conflicts. And, while these personal battles may not be diminished or eradicated in this age, they most definitely will in the age to come. God is the Ruler yet … The battle is not done, Jesus who died shall be satisfied, and earth and heaven be one.

As Paul so well put it in perspective, “For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal” 2 Corinthians 4:17-18.

May we focus, not on that which is seen, but the greater unseen, eternal reality.
