Life's Difficult Times

"But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways” James 1:5-8.

Amidst life’s most difficult trials (verses 2-4), it is easy to be unwise in facing them. As our faith is tested during such times, we might be tempted to veer from the path of faith, and even forsake it altogether. Giving up on God during the hard times is unwise, no matter how tempting the choice might be.

It’s been said that hard times either make us better or bitter. The tendency to swing between the two might be what James had in mind in comparing doubting to the waves of the sea. One moment we see the value of trials, while in the next moment we bitterly believe that God is working against us. Remaining stable amidst trials is the wisest choice, however difficult it might be.

Our Father expressly desires that we wisely navigate life’s trials, and is fully prepared to provide us with all the necessary resources. We need only ask, but in asking we must truly believe He will richly provide.

The wisest choice amidst life’s trials is to, according to an old saying, lash oneself to the mast. It was once a practice for sailors, to avoid being swept overboard in a fierce storm, to tie themselves to the ship’s mast for safety. We are wise to do the same, being strongly tied to our Father through Jesus by faith, when life’s storms are the greatest.

If this day finds you facing a fierce storm, may James’ wise council be your guide.
