“We give thanks to God always for all of you, making mention of you in our prayers; constantly bearing in mind your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of our God and Father, knowing, brethren beloved by God, His choice of you” 1 Thessalonians 1:2-4.
Few things are as encouraging as finding out someone has heard something good about us. For the apostle Paul, it was learning that, after a short time of only about a month there, the new believers in Thessalonica was surviving and even thriving amidst opposition (see Acts 17 for background). Although new in the faith, faith was evidenced in works, love motivated dedicated work, and hope was providing resolute stability.
The example of our brothers in sisters in Christ who are strong in faith, love, and hope is powerful encouragement and incentive for us. Witnessing the growth of others in these ways stirs us to grow similarly, and motivates us to be thankful in prayer for them.
Paul would later remark to this church which had brought him such joy: “for now we really live, if you stand firm in the Lord” 1 Thessalonians 3:8. Those whom we are related to in the faith should similarly bring such joy to us, and especially those whom we have personally assisted in growth. Our greatest joy should be found in those we mentor/disciple.
As a pastor of over forty years, I can attest that those of you whom I have been privileged to know and partner with in the gospel are among my greatest source of joy. Legacy takes on greater significance in our later years, and there is joy in reflecting on those with whom the gospel has truly taken root and is bearing fruit.
Like Paul, these thoughts come to you to today with thankful prayer as I reflect on your faith, love, and hope, and your progress in these.
