“"For evildoers will be cut off, But those who wait for the LORD, they will inherit the land ... the humble will inherit the land ... those blessed by Him will inherit the land ... The righteous will inherit the land And dwell in it forever ... Wait for the LORD and keep His way, And He will exalt you to inherit the land" Psalm 37:9,11,22,29,34.
The terrorist mastermind of 9/11, Osama bi Laden, stated, “our dispute with you is your support for your ally Israel, occupying our land in Palestine.” Were he still alive, he would likely even more vehemently make this statement.
The current Middle East conflict, with all the suffering and bloodshed, is ultimately about the land. Psalm 37, which mentions land no less than five times, reveals who will ultimately possess the land. It will not be obtained through war and aggression, but by those who wait for the LORD, those who are humble, righteous, and blessed by Him. In short, we are those who will get the land.
This great land promise has, unfortunately, been largely displaced in most of Christianity by the mythological hope of heavenly “pie in the sky when we die.” And yet nothing could be clearer than this great land promise - “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” (Jesus, Matthew 5:5).
You and I were made from the elements of the earth, and our destiny is inseparably bound to it. We will be elevated to immortality to rule and live upon this earth even as it is destined to undergo radical restoration to its original perfect condition. But we must patiently wait for it in the will and way of God.
The point in all this is that we do well to patiently wait and live righteously until our Father exalts us to the land. There are many battle skirmishes that will be temporarily won by aggressive wicked ones, but the ultimate victory is already determined. Wait for it.
Psalm 37 offers assurance that we do well to serve faithfully and patiently. We will be generously rewarded if we do not lose heart. What others desperately fight to own will be freely given to us. “But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells” 2 Peter 3:13.
