"Commit your works to the LORD And your plans will be established” Proverbs 16:3.
Conventional wisdom is that you plan your work, and then work your plan. Proverbs 16:3 suggests something somewhat different: work your work, and let God establish your plans. Be an active doer of righteous deeds, and God will tend to the details of establishing the plan and direction for them.
The word, “commit,” literally means,”roll." The idea is that of a burden so heavy that one rolls it to another for help. This verse can accurately be worded, “roll your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established.”
Since my college days, Proverbs 16:3 has served as a life guide. In my youthful zeal, I definitely lacked direction. I had a passion and a call to serve as a pastor, but no idea as to where or how. For almost fifty years, my Father has been faithful in establishing place and time for the work to which He has called me. These are plan I likely would never have made on my own, but I am confident they have been the plans of His choosing. It has definitely not always been easy, but there is peace in knowing it has been His plan.
The legacy of the past is basis for confidence in the present and the future. The God who has established plans in the past continues to do so. If we work and serve in the moment, He will roll us forward in the direction He chooses.
This present moment is a sacred trust. We can squander it through idleness, or we can make the most of it and redeem the time (Colossians 4:5). The great privilege of the moment for me is to share these words with you. If they have blessed, encouraged and directed you, then He has established His plans through this work that I gladly commit to Him.
