“I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” Luke 22:15-18
The Passover observance finds its ultimate fulfillment in the sacrifice of the sinless Lamb of God who, “having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet” Hebrews 10:12-13. Even on the eve of His death, Jesus was fully confident of the joyous future celebration of the kingdom of God. His death would provide kingdom entrance for us, and would in no way be a hindrance to the One who overcame death with life everlasting, and who would triumphantly sit at the right hand of the Father.
It is a common practice for followers of Christ to remember the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday of the month (although no set day, time, or frequency is prescribed biblically). As we remember, we do well to focus on the eager expectation Jesus had to share with His disciples long ago in that upper room. He is eager to share with us as well. He would have us remember His sacrifice, the binding new covenant, and the joyful expectation of the future celebration in the kingdom of God.
A popular television sitcom ended with a family gathered around a table. Reflecting back, the head writer of the series explained that the comment made in the series finale, “we need a bigger table,” had special significance. A bigger table was needed for all people of all times and all backgrounds. The Lord’s Supper communion is held at that bigger table. There is room for all; whosoever will may come. How thankful we are for a place at the table, and the warm welcome as we come.
