“Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; but just as it is written,“Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, And which have not entered the heart of man, All that God has prepared for those who love Him.” For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. ” 1 Corinthians 2:6-10
Paul described himself as a humble, unimpressive, single-minded gospel messenger who served as a demonstration of the Spirit’s power (verses 1-5). But, in verses 6-10, he indicates that he does present a wisdom for those mature in the faith. The powerful and rich elite lacked understanding inasmuch as they wrongly crucified Jesus, having grossly misunderstood Him and His purpose.
The wisdom that Paul shares is especially based on Isaiah 64 and 65. We often think of this as applying to the coming kingdom age, of which “eye has not seen and ear has not heard.” But, looking further at Paul’s words, we see that “to us God revealed them through the Spirit.” We have been given insight into the great eternal plan of God, including the coming kingdom! We are indeed privileged and blessed.
It ought not to surprise us that the world system and those caught up in it don’t have even a clue as to God’s eternal plan and purpose. The Spirit insight given to us ought not be basis for arrogance and a superior attitude, but humble appreciation at the profound revelation given to us. We are blessed with truly insightful understanding.
The purposes and plan of God have been established “before the ages.” As has been said, this was not God’s emergency response to human sin, but His redemptive, eternal purpose.
God's wisdom is deeper than human understanding, His plans are older than time itself, and through the Holy Spirit He invites us to trust what He has revealed rather than what the world can see.
