The One True God

“O LORD, the God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and showing lovingkindness to Your servants who walk before You with all their heart” 1 Kings 8:23

In a world that has always been filled with idols and false gods, the One True God has revealed Himself to us. As is stated in 1 Corinthians 8:6, “yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.” One Creator (Yahweh) and one Lord (Jesus).

Our matchless Father is truly unique; vastly greater than all He has created (“heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You” 1 Kings 8:27).

Unlike any other so-called god, He keeps covenant. He alone is a God of His word. Especially pertinent to us is His covenant promise of “the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time” Acts 3:21. Consistently and numerously repeated by the prophets from the beginning of time is the great covenant promise to restore the earth to its original perfect state, and its human inhabitants through resurrection and immortality.

He shows lovingkindness to His servants who wholeheartedly follow Him. As surely as He is faithful to His covenant promises, so He is in faithful love and mercy to those who humbly seek, love, and serve Him. He attaches the condition to “walk before You with all their heart” - humbly, imperfectly no doubt, but with a genuine heart’s desire.

Our Father has not changed. His promises remain trustworthy; His mercy is still available to those who seek Him. Faith is built upon remembering God's faithfulness.

1 Kings 8 records the prayer of Solomon at the dedication of the temple he had built. As such, we frame verse 23 within that prayer. Thus, Prayer should be rooted in God's character and His Word. Through prayer, we acknowledge that God is both transcendent and near. He is infinitely greater than the universe, yet He graciously chooses to make His presence known among His people. Praise be to our matchless Father!
