“Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:13-14
The church at Corinth had many flaws, such as divisions, immorality, lawsuits, marital issues, misuse of liberty, worship, and spiritual gifts. Having addressed each of these issues, Paul concludes with a concise summary of the kind of character the Corinthian believers needed to cultivate in the face of internal problems and external pressures. In these short phrases, Paul sums up how we ought to live.
"Be on the alert" - literally "keep watching" or "stay awake." Often we are warned against spiritual complacency. We face temptation, false teaching, persecution, and the subtle influence of the world. The call is to remain spiritually attentive, recognizing that the Christian life involves ongoing spiritual conflict.
"Stand firm in the faith" - this directive is illustrated through a soldier refusing to retreat from his position. We stand firm not just in faith, but in “the faith” - the body of truth “once for all handed down to the saints” Jude 3.
The Corinthian church was surrounded by pagan culture and was compromising in doctrine and practice. Paul urges them to remain anchored in the truth they had received.
"Act like men" - be courageous. While Paul speaks in military terms for men, women were not excluded. The entire body of believers - men and women - ought to exhibit courage. The call for all is steadfast courage rather than fear or passivity.
"Be strong" - more accurately, "be strengthened." Be strong in strength that comes from God rather than human determination (Ephesians 6:10).
"Let all that you do be done in love" - This balance is essential. Without verse 13, love can become sentimental or unwilling to confront error. Without verse 14, courage can become harsh, prideful, or domineering. True maturity combines vigilance with compassion, conviction with humility, strength with gentleness, and truth with love.
