"The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them" Genesis 3:21.
Our Father is the original clothier. The consequence of the sin disaster in the Garden of Eden was an awareness of nakedness, for which God provided animal skins for clothing. We presume that a cost was involved in that animals must have been killed in order for their skins to be provided.
The nakedness resulting from sin was more than physical. The very first negative emotion is mentioned in that Adam declared to His Creator, “I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself” Genesis 3:10. The legacy of Eden is the myriad of fears that overshadow us.
The ultimate cure for the nakedness exposed through sin is not more animal skins, but a more perfect covering: “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us” Ephesians 1:7-8. The perfect sacrifice of Jesus covers the hidden spiritual and emotional need of which we are aware through our fears.
The good news is this: "having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him" Romans 5:9. We need not be fear-driven in that the covering of Christ’s sacrifice spares us from the full wrath of God that the disobedient will face in fiery destruction.
It is true that we today are living east of Eden, in a sense, but we are destined to return to the perfect Garden one day. The promised One has crushed the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15), covered us in His blood, and has set us on the road to the renewed Eden. The plan of God began with a perfect earthly paradise, and the earth and all creation will return to a state of perfection again. That’s the great restoration plan (Acts 3:21) that God has always had in place.
May we live above the curse of fear as we savor grace, and anticipate the fulfillment of our hope. We’re covered and set free!
