"I performed My signs among them, that you may know that I am the LORD” Exodus 10:2.
So-called natural disasters are difficult to explain to atheists and agnostics. They demand to know where God was when He could have intervened. They assert that if there is a God, He would have averted such suffering.
We might speculate as to what Egyptians citizens were thinking as God deliberately unleashed a series of “natural” disasters through the hand of Moses. These were done largely for the benefit of the leader of the land, Pharaoh, of whom we are told “Pharaoh’s heart was hardened” Exodus 7:13.
Dramatic phenomena, whether directly initiated or divinely allowed, serve a very specific purpose, according to Exodus 10:2 - "that you may know that I am the LORD." The purpose, it seems, is not to convince the skeptic, but to affirm believers. Our Father is passionate about convincing His people that He is YHWH, the One true God.
The dilemma of natural disasters, as viewed by the unconverted, will always remain. But, the purpose of the power in a fallen world is that we might ever be convinced that the Almighty hand of our sovereign Father is at work. As the hymn writer stated, “I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed.”
May we ever see, and be increasingly convinced.
