You Are What You Eat

"Your words were found and I ate them, And Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; For I have been called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts" Jeremiah 15:16.

It's been said that you are what you eat. If so, a diet light in fruit and nuts might be advisable (perhaps it's not quite that literal). Seriously, the true meaning is that healthy food contributes to good physical health, while the opposite is also true.

Jeremiah the prophet testified to having a "sweet tooth" for God's word. He found God's words, and devoured them. Ingesting these words became a source of joy and delight to his heart, and reminded him that he had been called by the God of hosts, Yahweh.

For most of my life I've respected the Bible as God's Word. That respect has prompted regular reading, but initially so more out of duty and obligation than genuine enthusiasm. One of the greatest discoveries of my life has been the sense of joy and fulfillment that I have found in realizing that these words provide true daily nourishment. A morning devotional time has become the bedrock of my life.

Sometimes, however, passages we read are a bit like the vegetables on the plate that a parent battles with a child to eat (i.e, the book of Leviticus). The application and value of such passages is not readily apparent but, to borrow from the example of physical food, it is not necessary to fully understand the process of digestion in order to benefit from it.

Approaching God's word not only from the perspective of "what does it say?", but also from "what does it say to me?", can make a tremendous difference. If His word is truly living and active (Hebrews 4:12) then it will leap from the pages of the Bible into out hearts and minds and provide all the nourishment that it can uniquely provide.

We really are what we eat - physically, mentally, and spiritually. There are numerous Bible passages that remind us to carefully select the food that we serve our mind, and nothing is more important than choosing the best nourishment of all that God has selected for us - His Word.

Praying that we each find both joy and nourishment in a rich feast of God's Word today.
