"You shall also say to this people, 'Thus says the LORD, "Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death" Jeremiah 21:8.
Disaster was at the doorstep. A threatening invading army had encircled the city, and the king was wistfully hoping that the army would simply withdraw and return to their homeland. In desperation, the king sought a word from the LORD through the prophet Jeremiah. That word is recorded in Jeremiah 21, and it was anything but what the king hoped to hear. Essentially, God said that He would turn their own weapons against them, and would Himself fight against them. Because of their wickedness, judgment was coming. And yet there was mercy amidst judgment in that those who would escape from the city would be spared. God had placed before them the way of life and the way of death.
It is a timeless truth that the way of life and death is placed before all people. In Moses' farewell message he stated, "I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants" Deuteronomy 30:19.
We might wonder why anyone in their right mind would choose death when the option of life is before them, but sometimes the choice may not be clearly evident. The tactics of the tempter is to blur the distinction, as he did in the Garden of Eden.
Choosing between life and death is an ever-present daily choice. Each day and each moment we have the option of choosing our Father's way or the way of the world; life or death. The Apostle Paul said, "I die daily" (1 Corinthians 15:31). The irony of his choice was that he chose life by choosing death in that true life is found in dying to self. He chose daily to do so, as we also must.
We have choices to make today. Set before us is life and death; choices that are either detrimental or advantageous to our spiritual well being. Choose well and choose wisely.
