Race For Our Lives

"Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:1-2

I used to be a dedicated jogger (key phrase: "used to be"). Hardly a day went by that I wasn't out running a couple of miles. While living in rural Michigan, I regularly ran a country square - 4 half-mile sections of gravel road. I weighed about 155 pounds then and I was pretty light on my feet. Over 25 years later and about 20 pounds heavier, it is mostly my memory that jogs now, or at least needs to be jogged.

We're in the race of our lives. It is a demanding race that demands the best. We've got to be as light on our feet as possible, avoiding every obstacle and barrier. Even as we strain for the finish line, a figurative crowd enthusiastically cheers us on. Although dead and awaiting resurrection, their example strongly shouts encouragement to us when the race is hardest and the desire to quit the strongest. They persevered and finished well and so can we.

The ultimate veteran runner has finished the race and is now seated in a place of honor. As we run, we look beyond the finish line to this victorious One. When we struggle to put one foot in front of the other, our unblinking gaze on Him is the powerful incentive to press on.

Whether you are getting into your stride today or feeling winded in the faith race, remember the faithful ones who have gone before us. Above all, keep your gaze fixed on the One who has run the hardest race of all and has overwhelmingly succeeded. He not only strongly desires that you run well and finish well, but is actively working to help you do just that. Press on.
