"As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever." 1 Chronicles 28:9
Each generation passes along something of value to the next. Through the combination of words and actions, the younger generation sees and potentially embraces those values. But there is always the risk that they will not do so. The choice is ultimately theirs to make.
King David directly appealed to his son, as recorded in the verse above. Of all the priorities a king would seek to pass along to his heir to the throne, firsthand knowledge of the Creator of the universe was top of the list. As I pray for the leaders of this land, that too is my top prayer priority for them. If only every governmental leader might do so!
David appealed to Solomon to have so much more than an intellectual familiarity with Yahweh; he appealed to him to passionately and wholeheartedly seek Him. While this priority could be faked before people, it could not be with the God who "searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts." David spoke from personal experience, as the king God had selected because he was "a man after God's own heart." 1 Samuel 13:14. David knew all too well that God would be found by diligent seekers, but would reject those who would forsake Him. He needed only think of the example of his predecessor, King Saul, as a man rejected by God.
David's priority words can serve as an encouragement to us today. What he sought to stir up within Solomon can do so within us. David's passion can stir a greater passion in us.
"Father, create desire within us that was within David. We want to know You and serve you with all of our hearts and with willing minds. We know that you are not mocked: that You see and know our thoughts and our hearts. Renew a right spirit within us and transform our minds. Throughout this day may our hearts and minds never be far from You. Of all that we desire, may we above all desire and seek You. In Jesus' name. Amen."
