"So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us" 2 Thessalonians 2:15.
Traditions can be good or bad. Certain family and community traditions are valuable in remembering things of importance from the past. Tradition, however, can be detrimental and even dangerous when it replaced biblical truth. Paul’s admonition to “hold to the traditions which you were taught” is an appeal to embrace authoritative truth as he had instructed.
We live in an age when it is imperative to hold on to this truth. Long-held societal traditions are being discarded at breakneck speed. Some traditions should indeed be discarded, but biblical truth must ever be embraced amidst swirling change.
Holding on has never been more challenging for our generation than it is now. It appears that there are deliberate, concerted efforts to subvert and replace timeless truth. “if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Psalm 11:3. The question would seem to be rhetorical; little can be done to salvage a society hell-bent on shedding its heritage.
Perhaps the apostle Paul would word it this way if he were to speak to us today: Hold your ground. Don't give an inch to the tide of declining values and morals. Stand strong for the tradition of biblical truth. Lash yourself to the mast in the face of the ungodly storms society is unleashing.
Unsettling as our times have become, all will end well as Paul confidently asserted in the closing words of 2 Thessalonians 2:
"Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word" 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17.
