"Set up for yourself roadmarks, Place for yourself guideposts; Direct your mind to the highway, The way by which you went" Jeremiah 31:21.
In a book I’m currently reading, the author recounts a time he was hiking over fresh snow. He observed the various animal footprints, but then noticed human footprints. It soon became apparent that these were his footprints; he had been traveling in circles. Without a map or compass, he became disoriented.
Jeremiah’s words were directed to the covenant nation, the people of God. Collectively, they had wandered far from the faithful road they had once traveled, and needed markers and guideposts to find the former path. A key issue was whether they had a real desire to return to the highway of faithfulness.
Like many of you, I’m still trying to sort out where we’ve been since the pandemic of 2020. Life as we once knew it was upended dramatically, and we are thankfully viewing that time in the rearview mirror. But, we may not be as done with it as we wish. Emotional scars are deep, and much healing still lies before us. Many people checked out of church life then, and never returned. Maybe you are one of them.
Life was far from perfect before the upheaval of those days, but perhaps our spiritual bearings were more sure. Is it time to set down roadmarks and guideposts to help direct us to the better highway? Careful reflection will likely indicate that it is.
Significant spiritual events recorded in the Old Testament are linked with important markers. For example, Joshua and the Israelites built two twelve-stone altars as they crossed into the promised land (Joshua 4). Jacob built an altar in a place called Bethel after a nighttime encounter with God (Genesis 28). These were needed reminders lest they forget the dramatic actions of Almighty God.
My home church in rural Indiana will always serve as a spiritual roadmark anf guidepost. It was there that I learned the great truths of the Bible and first sensed the presence of my Father, and His Son, Jesus. An old schoolhouse in Ohio will also always serve as a significant marker because of a spiritual experience there.
If we don't mark the significant spiritual events in our lives, we risk venturing down a path away from faithfulness. Today, then, offers us an excellent opportunity to return. May we prayerfully and deliberately do so.
