"For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise" Galatians 3:26-29.
Few passages have more significance and application than these verses, so let’s unpack them.
Simple faith in Christ Jesus is the starting point. Notice that baptism into Christ is the action that faith takes. We become sons and daughters of God through faith exhibited through baptism, whereby we are clothed with the purity of Christ.
Through this faith action, we become members of the family of God in which there are no divisive distinctions such as are found in the world. There is perfect equality in the family of God.
An astounding promise is made to those who belong to the family of God through faith in Christ, and that is to be recipients of the promises made to Abraham. As heirs of these promises, we are strongly motivated to discover what they are. In summary, there are three: innumerable descendants, a specific descendants through whom all peoples are blessed, and a land promise. The descendant who blesses is Christ, through whom it is possible for there to be innumerable descendants.
The land promise is especially intriguing. The details are found in Genesis 13:14-16 and Genesis 15:18-21. This Middle East territory is given as a perpetual inheritance, and yet Abraham was among those who “died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance” Hebrews 11:13. For God to be faithful to His promises, this land must yet be given to Abraham, and we who are also heirs to the promise. This necessitates future resurrection life on the earth, which is exactly what has been promised. There are far too many passages to consider here, but here are some key passages for your personal study: Revelation 5:10; 11:15; 20:4-5; Daniel 2:34-35; 7:27; Acts 3:19-21; Psalm 2:6-8; Zechariah 14:4-5.
The implications of these wonderful promises are profound. They contribute to healthy self-esteem as family of God members. They revolutionize relationships in that there is equality that over arches distinctions such as are found in the present world system. There is hopeful anticipation in receiving the land promise with and through Abraham, our father in the faith.
May these precious promises excite and motivate us today as we live within the realm of who we really are in Christ.
