"He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?" Micah 6:8.
It’s an answer in the form of a question, much like a popular television game show. God reminds His people of what He previously stated as to what is good, and they are three succinct requirements.
Do justice. In essence, live with a sense of right and wrong; a concept considered outdated in an age of non-absolutes. The exploited and downtrodden especially need justice: “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow” Isaiah 1:17.
Love kindness. The campaign slogan of a former President was a call for a “kinder, gentler nation.” Unquestionably, that is an unfulfilled promise. The “kinder, gentler nation” must be the people of God, the community of believers. We must love to be kind to one another, extending abundant grace.
Walk humbly with God. This third essential prefaces the other two. “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” Romans 5:1. Unexpected justice has been served through faith in Christ’s sacrifice, and doing justice is the evidence of justice received. As recipients of the abundant kindness of God through Christ, we evidence that kindness through kindness to others. “But the fruit of the Spirit is … kindness” Galatians 5:22.
The “key three” of Micah 6:8 are timeless imperatives. The ultimate expression of these is sharing the life-changing gospel of “the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ” Acts 8:12.
