“Though the fig tree should not blossom And there be no fruit on the vines, Though the yield of the olive should fail And the fields produce no food, Though the flock should be cut off from the fold And there be no cattle in the stalls, Yet I will exult in the LORD, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation. The Lord GOD is my strength, And He has made my feet like hinds' feet, And makes me walk on my high places" Habakkuk 3:17-19.
The test of character is who and what we are when we are stripped of possessions and material security. This is a test most of us are generally unfamiliar with in our culture of plenty. Inflation may erode our resources, but destitution is unfamiliar territory for most of us. Would we, like Habakkuk, still “exult in the LORD” in such circumstances?
Habakkuk likely saw the coming desolation of the land, and the conquest of the people by Babylon, in a prophet vision. The situation would be dire beyond imagination, but he saw a greater reality. He found cause to rejoice in the God of his salvation; His strength. He also saw himself elevated above circumstances to walk on high places. He saw defeat eclipsed by victory.
I’ve stood on high places that I could never have imagined while growing up in the plains of Indiana. I’ve stood on the heights of the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee, mountains in the desert Southwest, and even a mountain on the island of Saint Thomas in the Caribbean. A prized photo captured the sparkling emerald-blue bay below, and the vast expanse of the ocean in the distance, dotted with small, lush green islands. A bank of dark rain clouds can be seen advancing against the bright blue sky, and it dramatically darkened a portion of the island below.
Breathtaking as the view is from these high places, they do not compare to the view to be seen from the high places our God has destined us for. We have been elevated to positions of authority and leadership with Jesus in the coming kingdom of God. Through prosperity and adversity, we are being trained and conditioned for the privileges and responsibilities of our coming exalted positions.
As breathtaking as the vistas are from the heights of mountains, they are minuscule compared to the high places you and I will walk in the coming kingdom on earth. We can experience this in part today as we walk the high places with our Father, and Jesus our King.
