"First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time" 1 Timothy 2:1-6.
It is a prayer for freedom to be about the work of the King and the kingdom. We are called upon to pray for government leaders to do their job so that we can do ours.
Involvement by Christians in government has long been a controversial topic, but this much is certain: our Father's heart for the salvation of all people is such that He calls us to pray for government to in no way hinder this important work. Our primary involvement with government is prayer that it not entangle or hinder us from our primary work.
It is abundantly clear that God’s objective is for all people to have the opportunity to know and embrace the truth that He is the One true God, and that His human Son is our mediator, having given His life to ransom us from fiery death in judgment.
It is God’s express will that all, so far as they are willing, be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth. Salvation and truth are synonymous. A salvation decision sets us on the road toward discovering, both intellectually and experientially, the One true God and the mediator man, Christ Jesus. If this goal is not in focus, then we are in danger of seriously diverting from the course that will lead us to the kingdom of God.
I suggest this to you as to how to pray for government leaders: ask that they be made fully aware that it is Yahweh God that they serve, and not themselves. Ask that they be freed to corruption, bribery, and greed; that in humility they serve the good of the people. And, pray that any legislation proposed that is immoral, restrictive, or dangerous, be struck down before becoming law. In this way we will have been faithful in our responsbilities both to God and government.
