"His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust" 2 Peter 1:3-4.
Few things are as easy to do as focus on our deficiencies. If given a sheet of paper and pen, most of us could likely comprehensively list, in a matter of a few minutes, our weaknesses and flaws. Such an exercise is anything but helpful. A better alternative is to carefully consider this great truth: “His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness." A key word to ponder is the word, “everything.” There is no deficiency in God’s provision. Whatever is needed to live the godly life of a follower of Christ has been provided. It’s like living alone on a deserted island, without natural resources and provisions, and a large care package is dropped on the island with everything needed for survival. Our Father has done exactly that for our spiritual life and survival.
Now, lest we think these provisions guarantee life on easy street, they must be appropriated through discipline and diligent work. It’s like a refrigerator stocked full of nutritious food; it still has to be prepared and cooked. Similarly, it is through active service and devotion that these divine resources are fully implemented. An important process is outlined in the following verses:
"Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 1:5-8).
How thankful we can be that, not only are we given divine full provisions, but also a pathway for utilizing these provisions. Faith is the starting point, ultimately culminating in mature, sacrificial (agape) love. Maturing along this pathway is assurance that we will never be useless or unfruitful.
Precious and magnificent promises have been made through our Father’s divine power. The spiritual pathway, made possible through His divine power, ultimately leads to the true new world order governed by Christ Himself. May nothing deter us from the path and this marvelous destination.
