God has given eternal life through His Son

"And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life" 1 John 5:11-13.

The human author of 1 John, John the apostle, was the sole survivor of the original band of twelve. From his vantage point as an elderly man, he was pointed and clear in what he wrote. The simple fact, as he stated, was that God has given eternal life through His Son. We either possess His Son through faith, or we do not. Eternal life is like a light switch: it’s either on or off; we have it or we do not. This life is found in the Son of God - a phrase that should be simple enough to understand but, sadly, is often confused. As a wise professor once stated, to be the Son of God out of necessity means one cannot be God. No one would confuse an earthly father with his son, and yet many do so with our heavenly Father and His unique Son. Eternal life is found in believing in the Son of God.

With clarity given concerning God’s Son, a wonderful assurance is ours to claim: “that you may know that you have eternal life.” Perhaps in reaction to a teaching known as eternal security, there are godly individuals who are unsure as to the hope of eternal life. Such uncertainty can have a spiritual crippling effect. There is the extreme possibility one can willfully reject salvation by faith (Hebrews 6:4-6), but aside of such a deliberate action, we live within the hope and joy of the assurance of salvation. We can know in this moment that we will given immortality at the return of Christ.

Truth transforms. The assurance of salvation liberates us for communion with our Father, and His Son, through prayer, Bible ready and study, and uplifting fellowship with other like-minded believers. As Jesus said,  “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” John 8:31-32. With the assurance of salvation settled, our focus is shifted to our fellowship with our Father, His Son, and others. We are freed to seek first the things concerning the king and the kingdom (Matthew 6:33). May we freely do so today.
